The city of Wuppertal is planning the construction of the 7th comprehensive school on the former factory site at Bockmühle 12–18, including the conversion of an existing hotel for school administration. The old factory buildings and a hotel extension are to be demolished. C5 is supporting the project in all aspects of sustainable and circular construction.
During the site survey, valuable and reusable building components, such as historic brick façades and salvaged bricks, were identified and documented. Based on this, C5 provided guidance on the reuse of materials, supported by technical assessments, deconstruction trials, and coordination of hazardous material reports. The environmental impact was assessed by calculating potential CO₂ savings through circular material use, and a cost analysis compared the expenses for deconstruction, storage, and reuse with those of conventional disposal and new production.
Deconstruction planning was closely coordinated, with support for trial dismantlings and input for the selective demolition tender. A concept for high-quality material recovery was developed, prioritizing reuse wherever feasible.
This approach conserves resources, reduces costs, preserves historical building fabric, and implements sustainable, circular strategies in the new construction.
